Price types for publishers sending data to or within the UK market Follow
Understanding VAT requirements between the different markets you sell your products in can be very tricky. We have pulled some information together to help you ensure that the information you add within your Price Tab for each of your suppliers is accurate. Please bear in mind that this information is relevant when submitting your data to UK markets, whether you are in or outside of the UK.
In the UK, all items except books, ebooks, sheet maps and sheet music attract VAT at a standard rate. Where all products attract local Tax, and pricing is for single regions, Nielsen Book Data and other data aggregators expect to receive a price that is inclusive of any tax – e.g. Australian and New Zealand dollar prices. Audio books will be charged VAT.
Currencies applicable to markets with differing tax rates: Some currencies are applicable across multiple territories where different tax rates apply – e.g. Euros, US Dollar prices. For these currencies, we expect to receive and output a price that does not include any tax.
Below is a summary of how Nielsen expect to receive and hold different currencies:
Currency | Inclusive/ Exclusive of tax | Tax rate | ONIX Price Type Code |
GBP | inclusive | Zero / mixed/ standard* | 02 |
AUD | inclusive | Standard | 02 |

* This depends on whether the product/s is/are vatable. The retail price for all items except those listed at the top of this article, include Vat – e.g CD ROMs, Audio books, etc. The retail price of a book and other item such as CDROM is taxable at a mixed rate – i.e. the CDRom is subject to VAT at the standard rate, but the book is not. A percentage of the price of the pack has been subject to VAT.
