BDS:
Bibliographic Data Services (BDS) is a UK-based supplier of metadata to libraries. The company has held the British Library Catalogue in Publication (CIP) Programme contract since 1995, providing core services to the British Library, and supplies all UK public libraries, many academic libraries and libraries around the world. There is no fee; BDS services are free to publishers.
They currently accept ONIX 2.1 and 3.0.
The testing process:
- Email a test file of no more than 50 records to: datasupply@bdslive.com.
- The file will get picked up and passed over to the IT department, who will test it.
- You will be given a publisher liaison who will then supply you with feedback/ftp access details. You may need to submit an updated file if your first set of feedback has any key issues.
- Once your liaison gives you the go ahead, you can then set up a regular feed from your Stison system to the BDS FTP site.
More information is available regarding BDS and their services.
The British Library:
The British Library is a copyright library that aims to have title data and a copy of every single title published in the UK. If you are a UK-based publisher, then you should ensure that you are fulfilling these requirements.
In order to send pre-publication information in ONIX, your organisation will need to set up feeds via BDS: Bibliographic Data Services Ltd. They manage the Cataloguing-in-Publication (CIP) programme through which publisher data is filtered to the British Library. The information sent will appear in the British National Bibliography.
The CIP Programme serves publishers as a bridge to the library book buying market and is free of charge to participating publishers.
Once a title is published and is available to the public, copies should be sent to the Legal Deposit libraries under the Legal Deposit scheme. You can send physical copies or digital copies.
Faber Factory:
Faber Factory is an eBook conversion and distribution service that delivers publisher metadata and ebook titles to ebook retailers.
Clients interested in joining the Faber Factory need to send a query or by emailing: factory@faber.co.uk. Faber will then assess the suitability of the client’s list and if they then sign up, will provide the ONIX specs and will test their feed.
Gardners:
Gardners is a wholesaler of books, eBooks, music and film. They work with independents, chains, online & specialist retailers around the world to supply books, eBooks, film & music to their individual requirements.
Publishers who have not previously spoken with Gardners and don’t have accounts should contact sph@gardners.com in order to start the process. Publishers that are already set up with an account for books and are looking to set up Onix or data feeds should contact dataservices@garnders.com.
Marston Book Services Ltd:
Marston Book Services Ltd is a publishing distributor that provides a range of fulfilment and print services. They handle a cross-section of books, journals and electronic products from publishers throughout the world, straddling the trade, academic, STM, arts, religion, educational and professional sectors.
Setting up of ONIX feeds for Marston Book Services is done on a client by client basis on request, as requirements will vary depending on the metadata held.
Any ONIX set up requests should be sent to onix.support@marston.co.uk, where they will be addressed individually. Marston only accept ONIX 3.0 for new set-ups.
Powell's Books:
If you are a US-based publisher, it's probable that you will want to submit your ONIX data feed to Powell's Books. Powell's Books is a chain of bookstores in Portland, Oregon, and its surrounding metropolitan area.
